Online Poker for Beginners 10 Tips to Help You Improve Your Game


In my last article, Online Poker for Beginners - 10 Tips to Get You Started, I provided some tips for online poker newbies. Here are a few more basics, plus some ideas for those of you who have already played a few poker games online.


1. Learn both pokerese - the language of poker - and online poker chat abbreviations. You'll need them both if you're going to spend a lot of time playing poker online.


2. Don't feel like you have to win every hand - no one can. Sometimes your cards will be junk - not worth playing - and you'll be much better off if you just fold. And remember, even a good hand can be beaten by someone with a poor one. Sometimes it's a matter of experience and skill, and sometimes it's just luck.


3. Online poker can be fast. Don't let the action make you nervous or push you into doing something you wouldn't have done if you'd taken time to think. Do take the time to think. You'll probably find you have more time to make your moves than you thought you did. And the more you play, the faster you'll get.


4. Stay away from no-limit games when you're just starting out. Get used to everything first - the site, the software, and especially the game and how to play it. No limit is a great way to win big, but it's also a great way to lose big. And getting wiped out early in your poker career is not only bad for your budget, it's emotionally disheartening, too. (Even if you decide to play no-limit games for virtual money, don't play carelessly. You don't want to develop bad habits that might carry over to your eal money games.)


5. Take your game seriously, but not so seriously that you get really upset or angry when you lose. Remember - you're learning. Go easy on yourself, and on the people you're playing with - or against!


6. Watch what the other players do - for example, when and how much they bet, when they fold, and when they bluff. When you're playing online you won't be able to read body language or facial expressions, but there are still ways to observe behavior and use those observations to win more.


7. Keep your observations to yourself. If in watching another player you discover something they consistently do that could be to your benefit, don't tell them about it. It's tempting to flaunt your observational skills this way, but if you do you've lost your advantage because they'll probably change their behavior.


8. Change your own behavior periodically to keep others from being able to read you easily. This is also a good way to try out different strategies.


9. If you don't enjoy or aren't doing well at one kind of poker game, try something else. There are lots of different kinds of poker being played online. Maybe, for example, you'll discover you like Omaha better than Hold 'Em, or 7-card stud better than Omaha. Even if you like what you're playing, you may want to try others periodically to improve your overall skills. And anyway, variety keeps things from getting boring.


10. Keep on learning. Along with playing actual poker games, use other resources to improve your knowledge and skills. Some of these might include:

- joining a poker forum. This is a great way to get your questions answered and meet other poker enthusiasts.

- checking out other online resources (besides the casinos, that is)

- watching poker on television (and especially listening to the commentators' remarks)

- reading books. In the beginning some of the language and hand descriptions may stump you, but as you play more you'll understand what the authors are talking about. There are books available for all levels of poker players, from beginner to expert, and for most variations of the game.


And remember the most important tip - keep on playing! The more you play the better you'll get, and the better you get the more you'll win. And isn't that what playing poker - online or off - is all about?

Costa Rica Watch Out for the Real Estate Sharks

Thinking about buying real estate in Costa Rica? It could be a great investment or your biggest headache. Read on to learn how to stack the odds in your favor.

Costa Rica does not regulate the real estate business and this leaves you, the buyer, at a huge disadvantage. All real estate agents in Costa Rica are in business for only one reason - to make money. They only make money when they sell a property. All the agent wants is your money. The expression ?shark? is a very fitting synonymous for ?real estate agent.? However, in my opinion, it is it is a derogatory comment about sharks.

Agents can be great people, best friends and can even be from your home country but do not trust them as the final authority with your investment money. They do not have your best interest at heart.

Here is my personal list of real estate stories (lies?) that I have heard from several agents in Costa Rica.

1. All Ticos (Costa Rican's) are out to screw you! I have found that some are and others are not out to take advantage of you financially. After living here for a year, personally I am more leery of Gringos trying to sell me something than the Ticos. This is because I know what the Tico wants but do not know the Gringo?s true agenda. Anyone who uses such generalizations should be included in the group that they are criticizing.

2. ?We don?t mark up property like other agencies...? They may not use the same % of markup (called ?Net Listings? which are illegal in the US) but don?t believe them unless they will let you or your attorney talk directly to the seller to verify the asking price. There is one very well known agent in the northern central valley that has previously openly advertised that he doesn?t mark up properties when in reality he does mark up property whenever he thinks he can do so. I forgot the exact words he used but the gist was: Real estate in Costa Rica is unregulated so we can do anything we want.

3. We charge a commission to the buyer because Costa Rican?s don?t pay commission. What a line if I ever heard one! Costa Ricans are not dumb and they know that to sell the property, they probably have to pay someone to find a buyer. Is the agent double dipping? I don?t know but I am willing to bet that nine times out of ten the seller is paying someone to get the property sold and the agent is making money on both sides of the transaction.

4. You or your attorney cannot talk directly to the seller. The excuse often given is that they are afraid your attorney is unscrupulous and may steal the property or something like that. My supposition is that the agent is either marking the property up and/or charging the buyers a commission while the seller is also paying a commission.

5. ?We have already done all of the due diligence for you.? When problem arises the water or electricity or the neighbors, your agent is not going to pay to fix it, rather he will say something like ?Gee I?m awfully sorry, I didn?t know about that.? One agent is advertising that they have done ALL of the due diligence on their properties before they list them. If that is the case, I wonder why the property I purchased from that agent doesn?t have any water available when he stated to me that it had water on the property.

6. Your agent states that he is making a full and truthful disclosure to you. California has one of the toughest disclosure laws in the real estate industry while Costa Rica has none. One agency in the northern central valley is currently promoting a house they are building on speculation by saying Vulcan Poas is not dangerous. In March, 2006, Vulcan Poas roared back to life (it is and has been one of the two most active volcanoes in Costa Rica) and scientists are now concerned because the water temperature of the lake is some 30 degrees hotter than normal. Is this a full and accurate disclosure? Not in my opinion.

7. Your earnest money deposit is not refundable. Some agents use contracts or ?letters of intent? that state that deposits are nonrefundable and that the seller receives the deposit immediately! You can and should write a purchase contract where your deposit is held in escrow and is refundable if certain conditions are not met. I strongly advise that you think long and hard about a deal if the agent says you have to make a nonrefundable deposit.

8. The seller can change his mind any time he wants and refuse to sell. Again, some agents do not know how to or do not want to write a correct contract. If you have a purchase option and have it recorded, it will be much more difficult for the seller to back out.

9. You don?t need to use your own attorney. Just read our personal experience with attorneys and you will see why it is imperative that your attorney represent you and only you.

10. You have to pay all of the closing costs. The custom in Costa Rica is to split the closing costs equally between the seller and the buyer. Of course you and the seller can agree on other terms but don?t start off by offering to pay for everything - that just makes the job easier for the agent.

11. You don?t need a new plano. Your plano is a legal survey of the property. Unless you get a new plano you will not know for certain that what you are looking at is really what you are buying. It is a fact that some fences are occasionally moved by the neighbors and a lot of older surveys are flawed.

12. Don?t worry about utilities... The previously mentioned agent and his associates use practically the same story for every lot they show to their clients - ?Electricity should cost about $3,000. The road should be about $2,500 and water is right over there.? Just make sure you verify everything with the proper authorities and get real estimates from the people that will be doing the work. Don?t be surprised if you find out that the real costs for installing utilities are up to 10 times as much as the agent stated.

13. The water is safe to drink. Over 90% of the surface water in Costa Rica is polluted with gray water runoff, industrial pollution, farm run-off and human waste. Even the large municipalidades have problems with human waste and gas getting into their wells. If you don?t know where the water is coming from get it tested.

14. Gringos are more honest than Ticos. This is a common misconception or misplaced belief on the buyer?s part that makes them feel more comfortable parting with their money. It is really easy to fall into this ?comfort trap? and believe that all Gringos are honest. The simple fact is that it is easier for a Gringo to sell property or an investment to another Gringo. Think about it - Why are all of the international time share resorts are staffed with Gringo sales people?

15. No, the lot isn?t too steep... If the property is steep you have two options: Build on piers which is more costly or: Cut out a building pad. Either way make sure you allow for adequate drainage. I have seen some lots carved out of a hillside where there is bare earth for forty to fifty feet almost straight up. Landslides are common in Costa Rica, even though it is practically all volcanic soil. Don?t think your lot is an exception unless you obtain an engineer?s opinion. My uneducated opinion is that a retaining wall just delays the inevitable. When in doubt ask an engineer, not your agent.

16. Ticos are not litigious like people from the US. This is an out right lie. There are so many suits pending in Costa Rica, some courts are backed up for up to 10 years.

17. ?I am an expert on Costa Rica real estate.? Ask them how long they have been in the country selling real estate. If they have not lived here full time for at least 10 years, then they, like me, are not experts.

Learning A Foreign Language Through Educational Games


If you have children of your own, or if you have a little brother or sister that you've watched growing up, you might have noticed how they started learning your native language. The first words they usually speak out are the ones that they come into contact the most often, usually the name of their parents, parental appellatives such as mama or papa or dada and so forth. Later on, as they are encouraged to express verbally, their vocabulary base will consist of words that they meet in their daily activities, which for most children simply include eating, sleep and... playing. This is where I actually wanted to bring the discussion to, learning a language through playing and especially through educational games that are specifically aimed for this purpose.


Since most children follow the above mentioned pattern when learning their native language many scientists claim that simulating the process at an older age can produce the same learning effects with a foreign language. The reason for this is that the brain already got used to that specific type of learning and it will adapt easier when confronted with a similar situation later on in life. That's why learning a foreign language through children's games has become increasingly popular among adults, despite the slight awkwardness of the situation. Flashcard games are such an example, a flashcard being a small piece of material with a picture of an item printed on it and a related word (or small text) describing the picture. The image-text correlation is extremely potent when having to memorize words. Using flashcards is a good way to start building the basic vocabulary for the language you're learning and it gives you a first contact with the language pronunciation (you'll need a dictionary for this of course).


Another great way to learn a foreign language is by playing computer games. Although most games are in English (and if you're reading this, you already know English I assume...) some computer games have translated versions for specific languages (mostly German, Spanish, French or Italian). If you can get a copy of one of these translated games it could be a great way to start learning that specific language and have fun at the same time.


A study exists in this sense, where a young English boy that couldn't speak any language but his native one was invited to play a popular online PC game on a French server. Although he was extremely confused at first, the constant contact with the other human players in the game, combined with a natural correlation between what he saw on the screen and the game chat gradually helped him understand the French language. The game experience was almost like throwing him in the middle of say, Paris, with no knowledge of the French language. After living in a foreign environment, hearing and reading a particular language at all times and instinctively correlating words with actions and images one actually starts learning that particular language, a fact proven by the above experiment. This just proves that online educational games (well not necessarily educational ones, but simply games) may yet become the future language learning centers of tomorrow. To the same extent, millions of players all around the world learn and perfect their English language skills while playing the numerous online games available today.


Of course, there are still classic educational games out there that you can try out. Some sites offer several such educational games for languages ranging from English, German, Spanish or Italian to Polish, Romanian, Turkish or Ukrainian (and many more). If you're thinking about beginning to learn a new language, these educational games might prove to be starting point that you need. Some are actually fun and quite addictive and they are a surefire way towards boosting your vocabulary in that particular language.

DIARIES OF A BUS DRIVER Vol. 1.5May 30th 2003


Dear friends,


Filling in accident reports is becoming a very unwelcome habit! Friday, May 23rd was a busy day - hordes of shoppers out in advance of the 3-day weekend. By the end of my shift, I was running close to a half an hour late. For most of my last run, I was driving in tandem with the bus that should have been 15 minutes behind me. This happens because as one bus gets later, as I have previously mentioned, it picks up extra passengers, slowing it further. The converse of this, is that the next bus picks up less passengers, speeding its journey. While I was to take my bus back to the garage we are based at, the other driver was to leave her bus at Palmers Green Garage and then, rather unfairly, have to fend for herself in getting back to Edmonton. She asked for me to pick her up, and I did.


The last road before the Edmonton garage approach path is Hawley Road. It is fairly narrow and way too busy. Also along the road, there's an office building, a large vehicle testing centre - buses and lorries, a tyre wholesaler and several small haulage firms. The approach road always has loading activity and cars parked on one side, and frequently, lorries and vans on the other. This was the scene that I found on the day of my latest accident. I edged between parked vehicles, coming almost nose-to-nose with a large artic (articulated lorry) coming from the opposite direction. He's bigger than me. I backed off! With the guidance of the other driver, I reversed into a parking position. The lorry driver, without acknowledging my gesture, edged forward. As he was getting closer to my bus, M, as I shall call her, advised me of company policy. If someone appears about to hit your vehicle, DON'T MOVE! If you move, the accident is your fault. If you don't, it is theirs. With at least 4 feet on the other side of his vehicle, he managed to wedge himself into my bus. Other vehicles were trapped. Tempers were frayed. Out with the trusted camera. Hands trembling as I wrote the report. Colleagues tell me not to worry. The garage manager jokes that he won't read my report until Tuesday - I should enjoy my weekend and he'll sack me on Tuesday! I have my witness. There will be no repercussions. But, I still don't like it. 4 pints of cider and two numbers on the karaoke (Summer Breeze and Blueberry Hill) later, I was relaxed.


The previous days' excitement was a bomb scare at 'the Jewish Centre' in North Finchley. I was stuck there for about 40 minutes. A frequent passenger, who introduced herself as Anne Marie, was extremely helpful, finding out what was going on helping to explain the situation to some of the other passengers. She was with her brother, who is somewhat learning disabled. When the emergency Controller gave me the all clear to proceed, I pointed to Anne Marie: This woman deserves a medal. She's been very helpful. She, in a loud clear voice: My name's Anne Marie. That's ANNE... MARIE. No modest embarrassment there! I saw her again the next day (the day of the accident). She didn't get on the bus, but put her mother on, asking me to make sure she got off at the right stop. When I got there, I called out is Anne Marie's mum getting off? Several chuckles from the rear. Not surprisingly, everybody seems to know her.


Those are the nice moments that make the job sometimes enjoyable. Other things that put a smile on my face are the little kids showing me their parent's bus pass - 'I'm a big kid' grins all over their faces, when a kid manages to climb the step onto the bus 'all by themselves' for the first time, and the number of gorgeous women who smile so nicely at me almost daily. A toddler of barely two said Thank you. Bye, as he was leaving the bus - so cute! A schoolgirl's bus pass was left on the bus and handed to me by another passenger. Rather than handing it in to the garage that afternoon - it would be unlikely to be claimed - I gave it to another girl from her school the next day, as she didn't get on my bus. Seeing her again, flashing the pass, was nice.


The new buses are very sleek, and much faster than the old ones. I have heard them described as sexy - presumably by people who would consider an attraction to sheep unnatural! One of the many serious drawbacks is that they have only 20 seats downstairs, giving more standing room. The 125 route is sometimes unaffectionately dubbed 'the ambulance route', for the number of senior citizens who ride it. A particularly annoying feature is that the horn, which wouldn't go amiss at sea, is touch sensitive and on the end of the turn signal lever, which can be extremely difficult to engage. It can be embarrassing when I accidentally let the thing off. Passers-by and other drivers look bemused, once they've settled back into the skins they jumped out of! My heart skips a beat! One car driver, on hearing this, drove through the red light we were stationary at!!


Accident day was eventful. A third incident that I think worth relating is when I must have had over 20 seniors on my bus and other people were taking up some of the seats. A particularly frail woman got in North Finchley and couldn't find a seat. Would somebody please give up their seat for this Lady. Nothing! I got angry. Look! I will not drive my bus if a seat isn't found for this lady. I will not be responsible for her falling over, if I'm forced to brake suddenly. There must be someone seated who's half her age. You should be ashamed of yourselves! I know I would be if I were you! I shouldn't have to ask! Voice from behind: Thank you driver! About time someone said that! The lady was seated. I drove on. Several other people thanked me as they left. One middle aged man wasn't so pleased with me!


One evening, while driving the W15, there were 4 teenage boys on my bus. An Afghani man got on, wearing full national dress. The boys sang the Harry Belafonte number, some words purposely changed, others presumably just wrong: Hey Mr. Taliban. Give me a banana. My initial reaction, I'm ashamed to say, was a chuckle. But I quickly thought of how intimidating that must have been for the man and just how difficult it must be in general for religious Afganis, both here and in America.


We can communicate with our car lights. Flashing your headlights can mean 'you first' or 'thank you' (only unofficially, though. The only legal use is to let someone know of your presence, so if, by moving forward, you end up in a collision with the person who flashed you, according to the law, you are to blame!). You can give a couple of flashes of your hazard lights to say 'thank you' or 'sorry'. What I want to know is, how do you tell someone to go f#%k themselves?!


You've heard of Tennis Elbow. You've heard of Housemaid's Knee. Well, since the weather has warmed up again, I have developed Bus Driver Thumb. This condition is caused by repeatedly giving the thumbs-up instead of flashing my hazards, to thank drivers who let me in to the traffic flow.


Yesterday, or at least what passed us such at the time of writing, was another eventful day. I was pulling away from the Southgate Asda bus stop, heading towards Finchley. It is just after a roundabout, from which, a car emerged during my manoeuvre. The driver seemed to think that I should stop and let him go, and expressed his anger that I did not. I too expressed my anger at his cheek, with a two-finger salute out of my window. At the next bus stop, he pulled alongside my bus, jumped out of his car, and proceeded to hurl blue clouds of abuse in my direction and punch the bus windows. He pointed to his kids in the car, as a reason why I should have let him in front of me. Great role model for them, wouldn't you agree? Are there holes in his argument? I had 30 passengers. He was driving recklessly, with or without kids. The law states, buses have the right of way. I have a busmen's key - a Cast Iron 'T', which, as a last resort, could do life-altering damage to potential attackers! I apologised to my passengers, who in turn commiserated with me. An elderly woman told me that a week ago, in similar circumstances, she saw someone shoot at a bus driver!


Earlier, while doing some overtime on the 34 route, I was driving along the A406, towards Walthamstow with a full bus. A van driver pulled directly in my path, causing me to brake and swerve sharply enough that an elderly man fell off his seat! I felt awful, but again, the passengers found me blameless. From the other driver, no remorse, of course.


There was an amusing moment. While waiting at the traffic light at Whetstone, Finchley-bound, a man spoke to me. In broad accent: I am sorry! I am French! I understand it might be necessary to apologise for this in parts of America, but not here. Macdonalds still call their fries French Fries here. In America, they have been renamed Freedom Fries!!!!! And here was me thinking that we Brits are xenophobic and proudly ignorant!
Anyway! I correctly guessed that he was apologising for his poor English, and that he wanted to get off the bus. I told him with a smile, that I would have let him off, even if he weren't French!


On a personal note, I went to see a flat. I was expecting a studio, but it had 2 bedrooms. Nice enough. BUT! It is situated at the corner of Green Lanes and The North Circular Road (A406) - heavy traffic almost all day. Very noisy. Terribly polluted air. I could never open my window! That most raids on suspected terrorists seem to be either in the direct vicinity or within a mile or so of there is not entirely negative, as it the last place likely to be the target of a gas attack! The following day, a controller from Palmers Green Bus Garage, who was standing at the opposite corner, pointed to the house next door: You see that kicked in door over there? A serious drug addict lives there. Bothers all the local shops - a real nuisance. No wonder it was cheap! I'm still looking!

Automobile accidents are responsible for the injury or death or thousands of children and young adults each year. Many of these events could be prevented by proper use of seat belts and other safety features of cars.


Outside of a car, it is important for children to know how dangerous moving vehicles can be. When playing outside, never chase balls or other objects into the street without looking for traffic, and never run between parked cars into the street as it is hard for drivers to see over them. Teaching children these behaviors at a young age is an excellent way to prevent accidents in the future.


In the car, there are a set of effortless rules that new drivers and young passengers should always follow. The way to prevent most serious injuries is to simply always buckle up. Even if no one else in the car is wearing one and the trip is just around the block, it is important to wear one regardless. In a case like this, it wouldn?t hurt to insist that everyone else buckle up as well to ensure their safety.


When wearing a seatbelt, older children should be tall enough to sit without slouching with their feet on the floor. The lap-shoulder belt system will not fit most children until they are about 4?9? tall and weigh about 80 pounds. The lap portion of the belt should fit low and tight across the upper thighs, while the shoulder portion should fit over the shoulder and chest. Although it may be more comfortable, never put the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back of the child.


Reckless behavior in and around automobiles is also a large contributor to the injury and death rate. Never stick arms, legs, or any other body part out of the window of a moving car. If another vehicle is passing too close it could cause serious injury. One of the most dangerous but easily preventable behaviors is drunk driving. Never try to drive after drinking, and never ride with anyone who has been drinking. It is important to always have a designated driver, or at least someone to keep keys hidden.


New and young drivers cause many of the accidents because they may have not yet learned how to handle a car properly, may drive at speeds to fast for the conditions, and are more likely to perform risky behaviors. Although they are commonly given a negative image, being a back-seat driver can save lives by telling a reckless driver to be more attentive or to slow down.


Concerning very young children, there is even more information to be aware of related to accidents and safety. Generally, the back seat is the safest place in a car accident, and any child under 12 years should ride there, especially if the vehicle has a passenger side are bag. Infants should be placed in rear facing car seats in the back seat until at least 1 year of age or around 20 lbs. Forward facing seats are acceptable after this point. In either case, always read the child restraint manual for proper and effective installation and use. It is recommended that children use a safety seat until at they are at least 40 pounds and then use a booster seat that will help the lap-shoulder system fit well.


It is important to remember that injury or death from an automobile accident can happen to anyone, not just children and younger drivers. Always promote safe behaviors near roads, behind the wheel, and also the lifesaving benefits of using safety belts and child safety seats correctly.

1031 CoOwnership with California Examples

Co-Ownership of Real Estate (CORE) is a new spin on the popular Tenancy-in-Common concept that many investors are using as a 1031 replacement property alternative. This article focuses on the 1031 co-ownership concept by illustrating it with California examples.

Many investors are finding that markets, like California, are becoming over valued. While they love the 1031 concept which offers them a chance to defer the gain and avoid taxes on their appreciated relinquished property; the challenge has been to find a suitable replacement property.

One strategy has been to shift to different asset classes within the same local market. Along these lines, rental property investors are looking to commercial properties instead of single family homes, or condos, or duplexes for more suitable investments. The investor’s equity can be diversified among several different properties, geographic markets and real estate companies, potentially increasing both the value and safety of the real estate investment. Finally, like TIC-investments, CORE investments are designed to offer preservation of capital, predictable cash flow and long-term appreciation in institutional-quality real estate assets that benefit from greater economies of scale.

The review showed that 45 percent of parents have improved their skills in securing their children safely on their booster seats at a second child safety seat clinic. The parents have improved their child safety seat skills after having undergone hands-on instructions on the first safety clinic conducted. While a significant number of parents have benefited from such clinics, Safe Kids Worldwide also cited that there is still room for improvements.

One of the aspects that Safe Kids pointed out that needs improvement is the number of people being reached by such endeavors. The clinics conducted only reached highly educated parents while the less educated sectors did not benefit from the said safety clinics. ?We need to do more to reach the communities that need our help most,? Lorrie Walker said. Walker is the training and technical manager for Safe Kids Worldwide. ?Safe Kids? network of more than 600 coalitions and chapters in the United States has the flexibility and skills to meet the needs of each community we serve,? Walker added.

In response to the said problem, Safe Kids and its supporters are working to create more inspection stations in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Their leading financial supporter is General Motors Corporation. ?Safe Kids has tools to help educate families of all backgrounds. We need to keep working to reach high-risk groups of parents with communication and training to keep their children properly restrained every time on every trip,? Bob Lange said, GM?s executive director of Structure and Safety Integration. Currently, the organization employs 119 Mobile Car Seat Check Up Vans to reach those communities which have no access to the group?s permanent inspection stations. Nationally certified child passenger safety technicians are also part of the campaign so as to further give the right kind of information to parents and guardians.

Safe Kids also shared that such clinics also need to reach families with older children. Their research shows that on their previously conducted clinics, the most number of participants are children below four years old. This presents a problem since their organization recommends that children should be provided with a booster seat until they are about four feet and 9 inches in height and weighs 80 to 100 pounds. Most kids reach this height and weight by the time they are around 8 to 12 years of age. ?In the event of a crash, a belt-positioning booster seat and safety belt provide better protection for most tweens than the adult safety belt alone. Children in this age group are among the least likely to be in the correct restraint. We need to make booster seat use among tweens who need them just as automatic as it is for small children to ride in car seat,? Walker said.

The continued dedication of Safe Kids in educating parents on how to secure their children safely is in consonance with a study that shows how correctly used child safety seats increase the safety of children. Risk of death of children as a result of crash is decreased by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers when the child is properly secured. Using belt-positioning booster seats also cuts the risk of injury to a child by as much as 59 percent. In cases where an EBC rotor and calipers is not enough to avoid crashes, proper installation of child safety seats plays a vital role in the protection of your most precious cargo.

Homeschool Classroom Checklist

Now that you have decided that you are going to homeschool your children, you are going to need a classroom, or at least, a reasonable facsimile. I don't want to suggest that you use the spare bedroom or empty out the garage. Most folks use the kitchen or dining room table as a desk for both the teacher and their children. What I do suggest is that you get some sort of portable wagon so that you can store your often use materials in one place. Space is usually at a premium in the homeschool classroom so you will need something convenient and easily portable. When you are ready to set up your materials for the day it will be a lot easier if you have everything in one place. When school is over you can put everything back in the cart and move it out of the kitchen.

You probably won't want your company sitting in the middle of your classroom. You'll also need a portable blackboard or a whiteboard to illustrate lessons and demonstrate demonstrate difficult concepts. Personally, I would not recommend a blackboard. The chalk dust is too messy for your house. A whiteboard is much cleaner and easier to use. You can get a small folding white board at any good stationary store.

First of all forget lunch boxes and backpacks. That is unless you plan on going on spending a lot of your time on field trips with your children, and you probably won?t even need the backpacks.

Here is a checklist, in no particular order, of some of the things you may need on your first day of homeschool. I know you may have most of them around the house somewhere, but get them all in one place so you won't have to interrupt your lessons to go find them.

A waste basket, cheap enough and you can always hide your mistakes :)

Separate work tables for you and your children. This is the ideal but you can just use your kitchen table.

A file cabinet - you will need to keep records, file lesson plans, test papers, your curriculum, report cards and health records. You will also need a bookcase.

A computer with DSL internet access or a dial up connection if DSL is not available in your area.

Have a wall calendar to schedule your monthly activities, holiday events, and group activities with your homeschool association and other homeschool parents..

Pens, pencils, and erasers.

Children in grades 4th thru 8th will need composition notebooks and spiral notebooks or a three ring binder. Get some pocket folders, too.

Elmer?s glue, crayons and colored pencils.

Organizers, such as small bins for crayons, rubber bands, and paperclips for separating everything and keeping things handy and in order.

Get a milk crate for each of your homeschoolers so they will have their own space to store their schoolwork.

Two highlighters, one light and one dark

Index cards, and a 12 inch ruler.

A good handheld pencil sharpener with two different size holes. You will be using it all the time.

Wide leaf loose-leaf paper for writing lesson materials and compositions.

You should have your own homeschool stationary. Select a name for your school such as Smithfield School, Homeschool Preperatory School, or use your own name or street name with ?academy? or ?preparatory school? tacked onto the end. Use your imagination and let the kids help, too.

Once you have your school name, you can make your own homeschool letterhead on your word processor. Then save it to your hard drive so you can use it on all of your correspondence. Put it on your letterhead and make identification cards for your kids. Do a good job in preparing these items and include photographs for a photo id.. You will want them to look their best, so get some help from family and friends if you need it. Buy some laminating materials and laminate your ID cards with your homeschooler?s photo to give them some legitimacy. Don?t forget to make one for yourself. They may need identification cards for admittance to school basketball and soccer games, maybe even the library. Many of the school supply stores you shop will ask you for a schoool ID for store discounts and freebies.

Most major stationary stores have special deals for teachers, usually in August at the end of the Summer vacation.

Staple's Teacher Appreciation Day is an annual event. that can save you some money. They also have a teacher's Awards program that will give you up to 5% off on purchases and free delivery. This can be a good savings and the free delivery is certainly a benefit to save you time.

These are recommended items you should consider having. If you live in a log cabin as Abe Lincoln did then you may have to make do with what you have. But Abe did OK didn't he?

Kids On The Move You Can Make An Adventure Of It


You're moving! Join the club of Kids on the Move. Did you know that almost one in five families will move this year? That's a lot of packing, boxes, new schools, new rooms and new friends.
While moving can be exciting in a way, it can also be pretty stressful - for kids and their parents. Think of the whole thing as a kind of Moving Survivor show. You'll have a ton of stuff to do, but it'll be kind of fun if you think about it the right way. To start with, here are some tips for your Moving Survivor adventure:


1. There's good stuff and there's bad stuff.


Maybe your parents are finally going to let you have a dog. Or maybe you're going to get a room of your own. Or a pool. Or a new city to explore. There's almost always something good about moving, if you think hard enough. Take a sheet of paper and draw a line through the middle. Start to write down the good stuff and the bad stuff about moving. Your parents may not have a list on paper, but they have one in their heads. They know there's good and bad stuff about moving, too. Ask them to write their list, then you can compare notes and talk about it.


2. Make a scrapbook.


It can feel hard to leave behind people and places that you've learned to like. It helps to make a scrapbook of the things you're leaving behind. Take pictures of friends, your old school, your soccer team, your old room, the tree in the back yard... whatever you want to remember when you move away. Get friends to write notes beside their photos, or help you think up ideas for things to put in your scrapbook. Design a cool cover for your scrapbook, and a title -- like Our House on Oak Street. If your parents are really busy, take some photos or write down some things that you think they'll miss, too.


3. Start an address book.


If you don't already have an address book started, this is the time to get one. You can ask your parents to get the real, alphabetized ones, or you can use a small notebook. Get names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses for any of your friends. What's really fun is if your parents will let you have a goodbye party, because it's a great time to see everyone and get their addresses. Find out if any of your friends have MSN or some other messaging service. If you're old enough to use MSN, it's almost like talking to your friend standing right beside you. Make sure you write down the email addresses PERFECTLY.


4. Get rich; have a yard sale.


If your parents will let you, plan a yard sale to get rid of all the stuff that you and your parents don't want to take to the new place. Old toys, books, games, your old bike, furniture you don't want... it's unbelievable how much stuff is hanging around the house and garage. Your parents might even let you keep the money for anything that you clean up yourself. When you're getting stuff ready, if something is broken, you can still try to sell it, but you need to put a sign on that says what's broken. People will sometimes buy a busted VHS player because they know someone who can fix it. You never know. Make posters for your sale and put them up around the neighbourhood to tell people where and when your sale is. If stuff doesn't sell, you can give it away to a charity, or just put up a big sign that says FREE! at the end of the day for anything that's left. Some important advice: make sure your parents know what you're doing and that one of them can help on the day of the sale.


5. Find a club to join at your new place.


If you're used to taking karate, swim class or playing soccer at your old place, ask your parents to help you find a new club after you move. You'll still need to figure out which kids would be good friends, but at least you know that you like some of the same things. At your school, they might have an after-school program. That's another great way to find some new kids to hang out with. Before you know it, you'll be feeling right at home!
